Mirror, Mirror On The Wall.. PINTEREST PREDICTS THE FUTURE!
Castle Goth, Baby Dolls & Cherry Red Have It! Pinterest's Surprisingly Accurate Predictions.
Over 500 million individuals utilize Pinterest monthly for the purpose of discovering and making purchases. Their annual forecasts have demonstrated an 80% accuracy rate over the past five years. Furthermore, Pinterest trends tend to persist for nearly twice as long as trends on other platforms.
Gen Z plays a pivotal role in shaping these predictions, accounting for over 40% of Pinterest’s user base. Additionally, approximately 65% of the platform’s fashion trends are driven by Gen Z’s preferences.
Pinterest Predicts is based on machine learning algorithms that analyze patterns in the data collected from billions of pins, boards and searches. Its accuracy rate and persistence with trends may have to do with the fact that Pinterest is a planning platform, as, on Pinterest, one is building boards of things to build, buy and do in the future.
A quick pause! The genesis of this newsletter stems from an ardent passion for all things retail, and a profound desire to contribute and give back to the ‘craft’.

Interestingly, Pinterest is doing more than just predicting trends, they are launching related collaborations and partnerships to capitalize on said trends. Which makes you wonder, are they identifying, or manufacturing trends? Kira Klaas has an interesting piece on this self-fulfilling feedback loop.
A handful of the 2025 Pinterest trends follow..
Cherry Coded 🍒
The color cherry red is white hot in 2025, with both Gen Z and Millennials incorporating it into everything they can think of, from fashion to makeup, even menus. Related, heavily searched terms have included: “cherry vibe”; “cherry car”; and “cherry martini.” All things cherry!
All Dolled Up
Doll-inspired is hot this year, although I think the Harajuku girls were ahead of the curve on this one. Think tiny collectibles, doll-like makeup and charm necklaces, among other cutesy items. Urban Outfitters is capitalizing on the trend. Likely rooted in the huge popularity of the Barbie movie.
Goddess Complex
Teeth grillz have never looked so good, with Pinterest ascribing goddess energy in the form of a custom 14-carat tooth gem created by Clova Rae Smith. Think gold facials, Grecian-inspired clothing and hair, and related nail designs. Even Gen X and Boomers are getting in on the action.
Seeing Double
Matchy-matchy is in. Who knew?! This year, expect to see way more matching outfits than you ever thought possible! The generations will run the gamut on this one, from Baby Boomers to Gen Z, and everything in between.
Castlecore
Like the goth trend on steroids! Gen Z and Millenials are taking inspiration from all things medieval, influencing decisions ranging from home design and decor, to fashion and accessories. Related search terms have included: “antique ruby ring”; “medieval dress”; and “castle house plans”.
The rest of the predictions are here.
On a related note, Pinterest dropped its 2025 color trends as well, cherry red included. It would be interesting to understand where these intersect with Pantone, if at all.

Remember the conversations we used to have about monetizing social media in general and Facebook in particular? I think the arguments by the older generations who were in charge of the budgets in Retail are over. FOMO has taken over and more and more of the Retail budgets are being funneled into Social somehow. Imagine if my merchandising organization could hit 80% on trends. Retailers would be killing it. Like Gen AI, how does social improve what I need to do well to be successful as a retailer?
